This relates to the tennis courts at Russian Jack Park. I have heard that interest is being shown in repairing and upgrading these courts. I would be concerned about losing focus on the Park Strip tennis courts. Perhaps the limited resources the Municipality has for tennis could be better spent on providing upgrades (restrooms, a covered area?) or additional courts to the Park Strip.
ReplyDeleteThere are a number of seldom-used tennis courts in poor repair scattered around town. I don't know if it's an either/or situation. But it might make more sense to develop a stronger, larger facility at the Park Strip where a community of players can develop rather than repairing courts in other areas. If the Russian Jack courts are an eyesore and don't fit into the plans for the park, maybe it would be better just to remove them.

I like Blair's idea of looking at all public tennis courts around town and prioritizing repairs. At the same time, I would like to make a plug for the Russian Jack Courts. There are quite a few people who use the ball fields near the courts. It may be that if the courts were fixed up, they would draw new players to the sport. Tennis can become an elitist sport. Fixing up neighborhood courts would be a great way to inspire new players. The Park Strip tends to draw downtown dwellers and club players. The Russian Jack Courts will appeal to an underserved area of town.
